Walter De Brouwer studied linguistics at the University of Ghent and received his PhD in Semiotics from the Catholic Tilburg University in the Netherlands. Until 1989 he was a lecturer at the Jesuit University of Antwerp (UFSIA) and a faculty professor at the International University of Monaco from 2001-2004.
He is a member of the Center for Entrepreneurial Learning at the Judge Business School of the University of Cambridge (UK) since 2004.
He sits on the editorial team of the Journal for Chinese Entrepreneurship.
In the nineties he was a sponsor and member of the programming board of MITMediaLab in the Digital Life Consortium.
In 1998 he backed Merton College, Oxford University for ArturEkert's Centre for Quantum Computation in the Clarendon Laboratory
After completing the Executive program FutureMed, he became an important sponsor of the Singularity University.
In 2011 he became a member of the Center for Body Computing of the University of Southern California (USC).
